Direct Mailing To Help Maintain Your Client Base
Years ago, my business took a desperate turn. I needed clients and fast! At that time, marketing was not as sophisticated as it is now. There were not as many options. However, I understood that in order to get things moving I had to appeal directly to the people I felt needed my services. I tried what I felt was best and that was to send out a letter to potential customers. It worked-I got their business and, more importantly, my customers stayed loyal for a long time.
Direct marketing is far and away the most effective means of advertising available to anyone running a small business. There are limitless direct marketing techniques that can be used, but all successful promotions have a few common elements. First, you must identify the people that are going to be interested in your product or service. Second, you must recognize what that audience expects your products or service to deliver to satisfy their needs. Third, you must demonstrate that your solution to their problems are better than any other solutions available. Fourth, you must give your potential buyers a sense of urgency to respond to your offer as soon as possible. Lastly, giving your audience precise information on what actions are necessary to benefit from your offer is a necessity.
Direct mail advertising, unfortunately has been connected to missives with a lot of hype and no real substance. Most of these get thrown in the waste basket. If you want a favorable response to your efforts, make your sales pitch relevant to the market you are interested in buying your product or service. You just do not want to have clients try your product or service one time, you want them coming back for more.
The most commonly found form of direct mailing is business to consumer. However, business to business (B2B) is more often thought of as being a far more valuable form of contact. Mailing directly to your consumers can often lead to a quick sale, but a business to business relationship engenders a more long term relationship between you and your customers that is likely to lead to more repeat sales and loyal clients. Your mailing may not result in a quick sale, but in building your long term client list, which is going to be much more lucrative and profitable in the future.
