Old Baseball Cards Continue To Be Available Today

by Menachem Green

Baseball cards are one of the most collected items in the United States. They are simply a trading card related to baseball, usually reflecting a single player, printed on card stock. Cards are also printed for other sports, but baseball cards, particularly old baseball cards, are the most popular of all trading card types.

It is in the 1800s that baseball cards came into popularity and in the same time baseball itself was growing in popularity in the United States. Initially the images of baseball players and teams were printed on the cigarette cards. This was used by the cigarette manufacturers for promotional purposes.

The first baseball cards were produced by cigarette companies, but as baseball and baseball cards became increasingly popular, other companies entered the baseball card market. Hand-drawn images began to be replaced with photographs as camera technology improved. Today, the antique cards with hand-drawn pictures are very rare and therefore extremely valuable.

Shortly after World War II, baseball card production hit an all time high. Several companies fought to be the top seller. A card produced in 1952 is currently the most sought-after card because of the scarcity of it. As more and more collectors (young boys and adults alike) began to buy cards, the sport of baseball itself was feeling the benefits.

Many companies started making baseball cards decades ago, but only a handful grew to become major producers. One of these had the bright idea of including a pack of gum with their baseball cards, leading to other matching them by giving away little puzzles, stickers, and so forth. Other promotional items that have been included are cloth from team uniforms, cookies, and entries into contests.

Today, old baseball cards can be worth lots of money! Old baseball cards are often found in secondhand stores, including antique stores and thrift shops. Garage sales and estate sales have been known to have collections of cards for sale. People have found old baseball cards in estates of their parents, grandparents, or strangers. Old baseball cards, especially rare baseball cards, can be sold for an amazing profit at auctions, auction websites, and some retail stores.

Baseball cards are one of the most collected items in the United States. They were first produced by cigarette companies when the sport itself was becoming beloved in the USA, but as their popularity increased, other companies began to enter them into the card market. You can find old baseball cards virtually everywhere, including thrift shops, antique stores and even estate sales. You can even find rare baseball cards and vintage baseball cards on online auction websites. If you have the right cards and the right selling venue can generate a small fortune.
